If you’re a celebrity fan, you’re probably familiar with the idea of “celebrity style”. It’s the look that celebrities wear to red carpet events and press junkets, that appears in magazines and on websites, and that often ends up being copied by fans. In honour of Pride month we’ve selected some of our favourite celebrities who are part of the LGBTI community and that are slaying the style game.
Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres is a multi-talented woman who has made history as the first openly gay person to host a daytime talk show. She also has an extensive acting career and keeps us laughing with her hilarious jokes on television. She has won several awards for her work, including an Emmy, People’s Choice Award, and even a Daytime Emmy! In addition to all of this, she is also known for her very good fashion sense.
Janet Mock
Janet Mock is a writer, editor, and Trans advocate who has worked extensively on race and gender identity issues. She’s also the author of the New York Times best-selling memoir Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Trans Identity & Love & Family. Janet has been open about her experiences growing up Trans and has used her platform to speak out about issues facing the community. You can see her style come through in her bold color choices and unique prints.
Laverne Cox
Laverne Cox is an actress on the hit Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and a transgender rights advocate who works tirelessly to spread awareness about transphobia and other issues affecting the community at large. She is also known for being a fashion icon; she has been featured in Vogue magazine several times. Her bold outfits are always eye-catching and leave us wanting more.
Elliot Page
Elliot Page is an actor that has starred in films like Juno, Inception, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. He also produced a documentary called The Last Straw that explores how plastic pollution affects our oceans. Elliot became an LGBTI activist after coming out as gay in 1997 and in March 2021, he became the first openly trans man to appear on the cover of Time magazine. Nowadays, he entirely embraces who he is and this is reflected in his style, which is very versatile and fresh.
Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris has been a style icon for years, and his LGBTI identity has never been an issue. He’s worn everything from sleek suits to glittery sequins, and each look is better than the last. While his favorite outfits are suits, he also pulls very chic casual looks. When he isn’t wearing a suit or a tux, fans can see him with jeans paired with button-down shirts and sneakers.
In the past, many LGBTI celebrities have been known to wear their sexuality on their sleeves (rather, in their outfits). From Ellen DeGeneres’ bold suits and dresses to Laverne Cox’s sleek pantsuits, plenty of famous faces have made a name for themselves by being unapologetic about who they are and how they choose to dress. They are styles and outfits that we can copy in the modern world.
